5 Minutes with….Jules McQueen

Jules McQueen is someone I admire as always having their act together. She determined and clear on her goals, she’s smart and realistic about her dreams; and she’s a good friend. She’s also a great example of “don’t judge a book by its cover,” as this hunter can beat you in poker match as easily as she can pilot a single-engine plane. In other words, don’t underestimate Jules.

The other reason I admire Jules so much is she is still going after her dreams. Recently, she got her first mule deer in velvet, with a bow, in a traditional ‘spot and stalk’ hunt in Utah with The R&K Hunting Company. And she also has a pretty sweet gig at CarbonTV. But let’s have her tell us more below….

Jules, I just saw your Instagram post of your mule deer in velvet! Congrats my friend!! Tell us about more about this hunt.

Thank you! Yes, I went out with R&K Hunting Company in Henefer, Utah, who I’ve admired for some time because of their excellent management practices and high quality hunts. My guide, Justin Richins, had spotted a few monsters before I got there – and I couldn’t wait to grab my equipment to begin glassing. I knew it would be a tough hunt as it was very dry in this grassy area – my boots were crunching when I tried to stalk up on the first couple deer, and I was afraid I would spook everything off….so eventually I took my boots off and hunted in my socks! I was more inclined to get stickers in my feet than to bust my own stalk.

Wow!! What happened next?

Justin and I had seen this deer walking towards his bedding area that morning, so I tried to set up in a spot where he would walk by me on his way to the field that evening. I was in the right place at the right time, and he actually came towards me and stopped at around 40 yards, quartering away. I put a perfectly placed arrow in him, and he didn’t go very far! This is my second mule deer – but my first muley in velvet. (Editor’s note – Jules’ first muley was in Nebraska two years ago – and she has the tattoo of that animal on her arm, which is about the coolest thing I’ve seen…)

Share with us the equipment you used.

I’ve been using my Mathews AVAIL bow for a couple years now with great success, I really like that bow and I like to keep using the same bow when I have it set up just right! I use Easton’s Full Metal Jacket arrows with Muzzy 3-blade broadheads and HHA Sports King Pin Bowsight. You can read more about the hunt on my CarbonTV blog.

Can you share more about your new TV series on CarbonTV – “Outdoor Weekly” – how is filming for this different than your usual hunting programs? What has been the feedback on the series?

Yes, Outdoor Weekly is a CarbonTV original series that is different from anything else I’ve done before! I am actually the Executive Producer and Host, so it keeps me busy!

We cover the news headlines and updates on things that are relevant to the outdoor community. Everything from record-breaking fish, viral social media videos, and changes in legislation is covered in this series, and we make it as entertaining as possible.

Outdoor Weekly is not a hunting show. In fact, we don’t really show any hunting at all! But if there is news that is relevant to outdoorsmen, we try to cover it.

People have been enjoying the series, and I attribute that to the fact that it’s something different and unique. There really is nothing else like it out there.

Moving forward I would definitely like to continue adapting and changing the series and allowing it to expand and grow into something even better with more information and bigger headlines.
