Superior, Wisc. (Oct. 26, 2017) — Last week at the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association (SEOPA) Conference at Kentucky Dam Village Resort in Gilbertsville, Ky., Muzzy held a Biggest Fish bowfishing contest for media attending the conference. After three nights of fishing, the coveted SEOPA Carp Trophy for the Biggest Fish went to Stuart Mize for his buffalo carp weighing in at 13 lbs., 11 oz. The same night on the same boat, Phillip Hunt arrowed a silver carp weighing in at 13 lbs., 2 oz.
The two Muzzy boats, captained by seasoned Muzzy bowfishing staffers Mark Land and Andy Cardwell, were filled to capacity with SEOPA media members on each of the three nights of action-packed bowfishing. Renowned for its excellent bowfishing opportunities, Kentucky Lake held to its reputation, yielding many fish on the boat—and even more misses, arguably half the fun of bowfishing. With seasoned bowfishers and first-timers, the Muzzy boats successfully arrowed various species of fish including common carp, grass carp, buffalo carp, gar, sucker fish and catfish.
Considered by many to be "trash fish," SEOPA members found out that these fish are quite good to eat. In fact, the carp from the fishing trips were used to make carp cakes—much like crab cakes but using the meat from the carp, which were served during the SEOPA shooting-day event. While there was some initial skepticism, there was not a single carp cake left at the end of the event.
"We always look forward to the SEOPA conference," said Mark Land, Muzzy bowfishing promotions. "It gives the members of SEOPA an opportunity to do some bowfishing. It's especially exciting for us when we have first-time bowfishers. Teaching them how it is done and seeing the excitement and instant addiction to the sport is very rewarding."
