Union College Scores National Runner-up Finish

CARRIER MILLS, Ill.—The Union College archery team collected a national runner-up finish at the 2016 United States 3D Intercollegiate Archery Championships.

Union racked up a total of seven medals to land them second behind eventual champion Cumberlands (Ky.), which finished with 11. California-Irvine took third with five medals, while Southeastern Illinois placed fourth with four with Navajo Technical (N.M.) rounded out the top five with three medals.

In all, 14 teams competed at nationals.

Individually, the Bulldogs collected three medals including two gold. In the women's bowhunter division, Janie Ricks won the national championship with a total score of 392 and hit a total of eight 12-point targets. Ashley Padgett scored a fifth-place finish with 351 points, while Kaitlyn Stewart finished eighth at 337. Amanda Hornsby placed 26th with 282 points.

Jillian Ballengee scored the Bulldogs' other individual national championship, winning the women's compound with a score of 401. Ballengee hit nine 12-point targets in taking the top prize. Jodi Hicks scored the bronze medal with a score of 388, hitting 10 12-point targets. Hannah Lane and Haley Golden posted strong showings, finishing seventh (372 points) and eighth (361 points), respectively.

In the men's competition, Lucas Roy scored the Bulldogs' highest finish with a sixth-place showing in the compound division. He hit 13 12-point targets in posting 408 points. Bryce Woodrome came in eighth (400 points) with Brayden Beam and Daniel Wenberg to check in at 17th (389 points) and 22nd (379 points).

In the men's bowhunter division, Morgan Vaughn placed 19th (362 points), while Nick Wright was 37th (333 points).

In team competition, Union took gold medals in Compound Mixed Team with Roy and Ballengee and in Bowhunter Mixed Team with Ricks and Vaughn. The Bulldogs also claimed bronze medals in Men's Compound Team thanks to the performances of Roy, Woodroom and Beam and in Women's Compound because of the showings of Ballengee, Hicks and Lane.

Nine Bulldogs earned 3D All-American honors. Roy and Woodrome earned the honor in men's compound; Ballengee, Hicks, Lane and Golden received the recognition in women's compound; and Ricks, Padgett and Stewart secured the honor in women's bowhunter.

This completes the fall season for Union. The Bulldogs open the indoor season on Feb. 18 at the USCA Kentucky Indoor State Championship in Grayson, Ky.
