Leupold started in 1907 making surveying equipment, and later J.C. Stevens invented a water level recorder and joined the company as a partner. The story is that in the 1940s Marcus Leupold missed a shot at a buck because his scope fogged. Angry, he set out to make a better scope, and in 1947 Leupold & Stevens released the “Plainsman” scope, sealed against weather and nitrogen purged.
