World Archery President Named to ASOIF Council

Prof Dr Ugur ERDENER was elected to the Association of Summer Olympic Federations' Council at the organisation's annual general meeting.

The World Archery President, who became an International Olympic Committee Executive Board member in February, will serve a three-year mandate on the ASOIF Council. He was elected unopposed to replace Pat MCQUAID, President of the International Cyclists Union, who stepped down one year into his term.

On his election, Prof Dr ERDENER addressed the room: "I will do my best to serve you all."

ASOIF's Council consists of seven presidents and secretary generals from sport's International Federations. International Tennis Federation President Mr Francesco RICCI BITTI currently serves as President of the ASOIF Council.

The Association of Summer Olympic Federations represents the common interests of the international federations with sports on the Summer Olympic programme. Since the 1984 Games, it has coordinated close cooperation between the federations.

ASOIF offers professional support and competent promotion to its 28 current members, while protecting the international federations' autonomy and integrity.

President of the Turkish Archery Federation for 23 years, Prof Dr ERDENER spent five years as President of World Archery Europe before becoming the first Turkish sportsman to be elected President of an International Federation.

As well as holding the World Archery presidency, to which he was elected for a third term in 2013, Prof Dr ERDENER is currently Turkey's National Olympic Committee President.

The ASOIF annual general meeting is held during SportAccord each year. In 2014, the event is in Belek/Antalya, which hosted the 2013 World Archery Championships last September.

Prof Dr Ugur ERDENER said prior to his election: "Candidature to the ASOIF Council is a personal honour, and a testament to the growing importance of archery. The sport is recognised as successfully evolving and our federation, Olympic and sporting peers view World Archery as one of the forerunning organisations."

"My passion to advance the cause and capabilities of sport extends to all the Summer Olympic international federations the ASOIF organisation represents."
