NDA Joins Other Conservation Organizations in Supporting the 30 by 30 Initiative

The National Deer Association (NDA) is proud to join 41 hunting, fishing and conservation organizations in taking a significant step forward for conservation by officially joining as a signatory to the “Hunting and Fishing Community Statement on the 30 by 30 Initiative.” The 30 by 30 Initiative seeks to establish a goal of protecting 30% of the planet's lands and waters by the year 2030.

“NDA is proud to stand with 41 like-minded organizations to ensure the interests and contributions of sportsmen and sportswomen are incorporated into policies intended to advance 30 by 30 goals,” said Torin Miller, NDA’s Director of Policy. “Hunters and anglers are America’s original conservationists, and we must be a part of any solutions to conserve our nation’s terrestrial, freshwater, and marine ecosystems. While 30 by 30 is an aggressive goal, our communities are well-positioned to make a continued difference in the conservation of our national and global resources.”

In order to generate support from the hunting and fishing community, the Community Statement on the 30 by 30 Initiative highlights five key areas that must be included in 30 by 30 policies:

• Recognizing the positive role that hunting and fishing play in conservation.

• Protected area definitions that allow for well-managed and sustainable wildlife-dependent activities.

• Consideration of existing protected areas and other management strategies that achieve biodiversity conservation in measuring progress toward stated goals.

• Targeted, science-based conservation measures developed through a stakeholder-driven process to address biodiversity threats.

• Clearly defined roles and authorities for the entities charged with carrying out the 30 by 30 Initiative proposal.

The coalition of signatories to the Community Statement have also established a website, HuntFish3030.com, to provide hunters and anglers with information about the 30 by 30 Initiative. The website includes a petition that allows individuals the opportunity to make their voice heard as elected officials consider policy proposals related to the Initiative. NDA encourages its members and all dedicated conservationist to visit the website and sign the petition.

NDA is dedicated to ensuring the future of wild deer, wildlife habitat and hunting. Certainly, protecting the planet’s lands and waters ensures the future of all three. Protecting deer and hunting requires skill in the rooms where wildlife policy and legislation are formed, and NDA strives every day to ensure that deer hunters have a seat at the table.
