MonsterMeal® wildlife feed and attractants would like to remind those that feed deer about summer stress on your deer herd. Summer feeding is important for the same reason that winter feeding can be. In many area of the country, especially agricultural areas, summer feed quality can vary drastically.

Ag monoculture, drought/overly wet conditions, heat stress, and agricultural hay/forage harvesting can all have incremental effects on available nutrition. Some of these conditions are short term and mitigate themselves with little effect on your herd. Others can last for weeks and those conditions affect overall habitat quality. In addition, if deer cannot find what they need, they are forced to move.

Brand Manager for Monster meal, Blake Davis says “Many people assume that because summer is here that deer automatically have access to optimized nutrition. Some things to consider about a supplemental feeding program that do not get talked about very often:

1. All feeding should be looked at as supplementing natural habitat. We never want deer dependent on one source for all of their nutritional needs. Add what they lack, do not try to be everything to your deer herd.

4. Heat has a negative effect on lactation! Good starts equal good finishes. Mom will build a great fawn if she has what she needs. Fawn survival drops drastically as stress indicators compound. It is easy to keep enough high-quality forage available at all times with even a small pellet trough.
5. Many good properties have limited high quality browse. Feeding can help with browse regeneration and fill the nutritional gaps for all deer. Again, if a deer has ample habitat, they can shrink their home range and remain in a smaller area. In addition, the ability to draw deer from areas that lack high quality habitat increases by creating a destination for your wildlife.
