Doug Stange: In-Fisherman

Doug Stange is the Editor-in-Chief of In-Fishermanmagazine, the host of In-Fisherman TV on Sportsman Channel and in our minds, an angling legend! This week, Doug joins Jim and Trav to talk bass and bluegill fishing. Tune in as Doug kicks things off talking knots. Any angler, or aspiring angler, understands the importance of tying a good knot, and Doug will talk about the palomar, trilene and improved clinch knots. He’ll highlight the knot he prefers when fishing for bass and explains how knot tying has to be adjusted based on the test of the line you’re using. Then, he’ll introduce us to a different technique for bluegill fishing. Using spoons, like a Kastmaster or Swedish Pimple, Doug will explain how to modify these with a smaller single hook and a small trailer like a little tube or curly tail. When used with lighter test line the angler can make long casts and then let it go all the way to the bottom. On the retrieve he recommends a slow grind, keeping it right along the bottom, stopping once in a while. Doug tells Jim and Trav that this technique is very attractive to bluegills and they tend to peck at it while you reel and eventually, will hook themselves. He’ll also talk about using Gulp or Powerbait in this situation to improve your chance of success. Finally, he’ll explain how to locate bluegills. Depending on where you are geographically, bluegill patterns vary. In the North, bluegills may still be on the beds, but the further south you move they are entering their summer patterns. Doug says that you won’t find as many in the shallows, unless there is cover. Instead, bluegills will be dropping off the edges, tucking inside the weed edges, timber cover, creek channels and generally seeking out deeper water. Brian Tucker: Hi Mountain Seasonings

You caught a mess of fish, what do you do with them now? Cook them of course! There are a lot of ways to prepare your fresh catch, but you can elevate the taste of your fish with flavors from Hi Mountain Seasonings. CatDaddy: Warm Water Catfish

All aboard the Tuna Tub, it’s time to do some fishing with CatDaddy! Summer hasn’t even officially started yet, but the temperatures are sizzling, and the bite is on. CatDaddy tells Jim and Trav that the water temperature is at 87 degrees and some people worry that the warm water might deter the bite. However, he says that a good, sharp, straight edge is what you should look for because the catfish will be residing there. On a recent guided trip, that’s exactly what he did, and they were able to hook up with twenty-seven channel cats and one blue cat. Encouraging the bite is his use of dip bait right now. CatDaddy says the warmer the water is, the better, because as soon as the bait hits the water, the scent disperses and starts working automatically, attracting the catfish. If you are using dip bait during these hot days, CatDaddy will also dish a quick tip to keep it from liquifying. How does he rig up a winning dip bait set-up? CatDaddy tells Jim and Trav that he prefers a hefty and strong treble hook with a 1Ž4 ounce weight sitting right on top. Then, using a piece of hat sponge, he puts it right over the treble hook and dips it in his bait. The porous sponge really absorbs the dip bait, and even the weight that is sitting right on top of the hook gets covered. At that point, you’re ready to rock and roll.
