RALEIGH, N.C. (Sept. 15, 2017) — As deer season ramps up, the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission reminds hunters to follow safety guidelines when hunting from a tree stand. Accidents involving tree stands are the leading cause of injury while hunting.

"Take adequate time to properly prepare your tree stand and be sure to follow the manufacturer's recommended safety procedures," said Chet Clark, the Commission's eastern outreach manager. "The extra time that it takes to prepare is essential as it helps prevent injuries and will help hunters return home safe and sound."

Commission tree stand safety recommendations include:

• Before using a stand, check all belts, chains, bolts and attachment cords for damage and wear.
  
• Select a healthy, straight tree for your tree stand.
  
• Use a full-body safety harness at all times.
  
• Set up the stand with another person.
  
• Let someone know where you're setting up your stand ahead of time.
  
• Bring an emergency signal device, such as a cell phone or a whistle.
  
• Never carry anything as you climb – use a haul line to raise and lower equipment.
  
• Maintain three points of contact when climbing up or down a stand, as most falls occur during this time.
  
• Do not exceed manufacturer's maximum height or weight settings.
