Georgetown (KY) College Athletics Adds Archery, Hires Coach

Georgetown College athletics is excited to announce its third new program in five years. The Tigers will be grabbing bows and arrows and be shooting for a new target – championships in the growing sport of archery.

"We have been tracking this emerging sport over the past few years and have a very good feeling about its potential to blossom and its fit with our goals at Georgetown College," said GC director of athletics Brian Evans. "The national tournament for high school athletes and younger is in Louisville every year and similar to our decisions with lacrosse and acrobatics and tumbling, this just seemed to be the right time for this addition."

Currently, 16 colleges compete in the United States Collegiate Archery Association – two of which are Mid-South Conference schools. Georgetown makes it 17, joining the University of the Cumberlands and Campbellsville University as conference schools with teams. Nearby Midway University, Union College, Bethel University, and Kentucky Christian University also currently compete with USCAA.

Coach Dummer

The first part of the expansion is hiring the right coach. Evans did a vast search, but in the end did not have to look far or to someone unfamiliar to the Tiger family.

"We had several good candidates, but Jimmy Dummer stood out and it helps that he's familiar with our mission and the athletic department as a whole," Evans said.

Dummer was an assistant football coach from 2007-2012, helping guide the kickers for coach Bill Cronin. He has been coaching archery the past few seasons at Scott County High School and also serves as a soccer coach on various club teams.

His wife, Dr. Susan Dummer, is an associate professor and chair of the communication and media studies department at Georgetown College. Their eldest, Tyler, is a freshman on campus. The couple also has a daughter, Josie, who is a seventh-grader at Royal Spring Middle School.

"Jimmy is familiar with this area, is ingrained in this community, has a passion for Georgetown, and a vast ability at coaching. We could not be more excited to have him on staff guiding our archery team," Evans said.

The Tigers will have a co-ed program and coach Dummer will begin recruiting immediately.

"Obviously the college means a lot to me and my family," Dummer said. "This is a great opportunity and I'm looking forward to the challenge of guiding a college program, starting it from the ground and building it."
