Lt. GreenThe Michigan Department of Natural Resources http://www.michigan.gov/oac/">Outdoor Adventure Center (OAC) archery range in downtown Detroit was dedicated in honor of 1st Lt. Arthur A. Green III.

Lt. Green died Aug. 9, 2015, in a plane crash in Emmet County while on duty.

With the Green family in attendance, DNR Chief Administrative Officer Mark Hoffman and DNR Law Enforcement Division Chief Gary Hagler unveiled a plaque in honor of Lt. Green. They commemorated Lt. Green's many years of service and dedication to the state and the country.

"We all knew Lt. Green to be dedicated to his career as a conservation officer and to the protection of the state's natural resources," Hagler said. "He also had a love for children, sharing his enthusiasm for flying with many children in the metro-Detroit area. He was passionate about opening up their minds to career paths and experiences they may not have envisioned before."

Lt. Green was active in The Tuskegee Airmen National Historical Museum in Detroit and served as a past president of the organization. He was a dedicated pilot to the Young Eagles Program, where he helped introduce over 400 Detroit and metro-Detroit youth to their first airplane rides, along with exposing them to opportunities and careers in the field of aviation.

Hagler said that it was fitting to dedicate the OAC archery range in Lt. Green's memory at a place where thousands of youth will visit for years to come to learn about Michigan's natural resources and outdoor activities.

Plaque"The Department of Natural Resources is honored to dedicate the 1st. Lt. Arthur A. Green III Archery Range in the Outdoor Adventure Center to the man who dedicated his life to helping others," Hoffman said. "The community, the state and the DNR were well-served to have had Lt. Green amongst its ranks."

Hoffman said that the OAC builds upon Lt. Green's legacy, introducing urban youth to new and positive experiences, including archery.

"This archery range will continue to open up exciting experiences to young people," he said.

Lt. Green served as district law supervisor for the DNR's District 9, which includes Wayne, Oakland, Monroe, Genesee, Lapeer, Macomb and St. Clair counties. His office was in the Detroit Customer Service Center, housed within the OAC.

In 1976, Lt. Green joined the United States Air Force. He served in the Michigan Air National Guard at Selfridge Air National Guard Base where he was a member of the Military Police. He served a tour of duty in Kuwait in 2002 and retired as a Master Sergeant in 2004.

DedicationIn 1996, after serving 10 years in the Detroit Police Department, he became a conservation officer in the DNR. While serving as district law supervisor, Lt. Green was instrumental in the smooth transition of Belle Isle Park in Detroit to DNR management. He also played a vital role in the DNR Youth Conservation Academy, held for Detroit youth and young adults.

The 1st Lt. Arthur A. Green III Archery Range, located in the OAC at 1801 Atwater St., is open for adult and youth classes. Preregistration is required.
