UC Archery Earns Runner-Up Finish at USCA Outdoor Nationals

The University of the Cumberlands (UC) Archery team looked to repeat as National Champions this past weekend at the 2016 US Outdoor Intercollegiate Archery National Championships. Although they would fall slightly short of this goal, several Patriot archers picked up hardware and placed high in their respective events. UC would finish 2nd as a team out of 18 participating teams and pick up a total of 11 metals; 7 gold, 2 silver, and 2 bronze metals.

BY THE NUMBERS
Bowhunter Team
· In the Men's Bowhunter division, Caleb Kirby (London, KY), Aaron Cook (Stanford, KY), and Jayson Byrd (Goodway, AL) placed 1st out of 5 teams, going 3-0 in the tournament. They would defeat Mississippi College in the finals 212 to 191 to claim the title.
· In the Women's Bowhunter division, Courtnie Carr (Frankfort, KY), Nicole Nivison (Lawrenceburg, KY), and Haley Haygood (Liberty, MS) would place 1st out of 2 teams going 2-0 in the tournament. They would defeat Mississippi College in the finals 204-179.
· In the Mixed Bowhunter division, Caleb Kirby (London, KY) and Courtnie Carr (Frankfort, KY) placed 1st out of 5 teams going 3-0 in the tournament. They would defeat Northern Arizona University 143-137 in the finals.

Bowhunter Individual
· In the Men's Bowhunter division Caleb Kirby (London, KY) would place 1st going 4-0 in the tournament, defeating Nathaniel Shon from UC Irvine 129-121 in the finals.
· In the Women's Bowhunter division Courtnie Carr (Frankfort, KY) would finish in 3rd place going 4-1 in the tournament. She would defeat teammate Haley Haygood (Liberty, MS) 133 to 117 for 3rd place.

Compound Team
· In the Men's Compound division, John Whalen (Booneville, IN), Cole Likins (London, KY), and Korey Snyder (London, KY) would finish in 2nd place out of 6 teams going 2-1 in the tournament. They would fall to Northern Arizona University 215-214 in the finals.
· In the Women's Compound division, Madeline Brown (Boonville, IN), Kristen Swords (Ecru, MS), and Kayla Dowell (Payneville, KY) would capture 1st place out of 2 teams going 2-0 in the tournament. They would defeat Kentucky Christian University 191-150
· In the compound mixed team Madeline Brown (Boonville, IN) and John Whalen (Booneville, IN) would place 1st out of 7 teams going 3-0 in the tournament. They would defeat Union College 143-141 in the finals

Compound Individual
· In the Men's division Cole Likins (London, KY) would finish in 3rd place out of 21 archers going 4-1 in the tournament. He would defeat Roy Lucas from Union College to capture 3rd place.

Recurve Individual
· In the Women's division Alice Buswell (Westborough, MA) captured 1st place in a field of 14 archers going 4-0 in the tournament. She would defeat Eva Morozko of UC Irvine 6-2 in the finals.

Recurve Team
· In the Women's division, Alice Buswell (Westborough, MA), Lakin Crum (Ashland, KY), and Hannah Blevins (Eubank, KY) would finish in 2nd place out of 3 teams going 1-1 in the tournament. The Patriot archers would fall to UC Irvine 5 to 4.

The Patriots had numerous members named Academic All-Americans as well as All-Americans. Haley Haygood, Courtnie Carr, Kayla Dowell, and Alice Buswell were all named Academic All-Americans. To be named Academic All-American, you must hold at least a 3.3 GPA and be in the top 25% of your class.

Alice Buswell, Lakin Crum, and Hannah Blevins were named All-Americans for Women's Recurve. John Whalen, Korey Snyder, Cole Likins, and Clint Moore were named All-Americans for Men's Compound. Kayla Dowell, Kristen Swords, and Madeline Brown were named All-Americans for Women's Compound while Caleb Kirby, Aaron Cook, Jayson Byrd, and Josh Owen were honored as All-Americans for Men's Bowhunter. Finally, Courtnie Carr, Haley Haygood, and Nicole Nivison were named All-Americans for Women's Bowhunter.

Head Coach Kris Strebeck commented, "I'm so proud of how we competed this past weekend. We had to work hard for every medal that we earned and at the end of the weekend, we were at the top. To come back with seven National Titles is a huge accomplishment to the team and it shows the hard work that they have put in all season. I want to thank our senior class for all the great memories and accomplishments. They will be missed."
