Indiana S3DA holds Indoor State Championship in Boonville, IN

Williamsburg, KY – Indiana S3DA hosted an Indoor State Championship at the Lebanon National Guard Armory in Boonville, Indiana. There were eleven clubs and teams with a total of 284 kids that competed in the Indoor Championship. The viewing area was a little tight for the spectators, but there was a balcony available to watch from also. Roughly 600 spectators showed up for the event. Wabash Valley College Coach, Earl Lawrence, was present to hand out scholarships and talk with the students about their archery program and academics. Three other colleges and universities sent scholarships for podium finishers.

Indiana S3DA ran a Friday night flight, as well as 3 flights on Saturday to accommodate all shooters. There was a 40-lane set-up and on the Saturday noon flight there was one line that featured 20-yard shooters and one line with 10-yard shooters. This worked very well because there were two older kids on the bale with two younger kids. The older kids were able to show the younger kids how to call arrows and score.

Indiana State Coordinator Greg Ashley stated, “In the growth we are expecting for the 2020 Indoor season, we are going to have to have a bigger venue. This is a nice venue and we are very thankful for the opportunity to use the armory, but I am not certain that it will be able to accommodate the numbers next year. What is exciting about the State Championship, is the kids get to see other kids from all over the state for the first time all year. This is my first year as the State Coordinator and I feel that this event went well.”

Started in December 2012 by the Scholastic Archery Association, S3DA has grown exponentially as a next step program to follow introductory programs offered as part of 4-H or the National Archery in Schools Program. S3DA addresses the need for a program to bridge beginning target archery experience and more advanced activities such as 3-D shooting and bowhunting. The program currently operates across the United States with hundreds of certified coaches serving thousands of young archers, grades 3–12.
